Sign Warrior

We need help recruiting Sign Warriors!

Signs provide important visual cues to drivers. Even the most attentive driver can miss or curve or zoom unsafely through an intersection if signs are damaged or missing. That's why local road agencies in your area are working with the North Dakota Local Technical Assistance Program (NDLTAP) on a sign protection awareness program in schools across the state.

In the program, a "Sign Warrior" cartoon superhero encourages 3rd and 4th graders to "SAVE OUR SIGNS!" by being alert to the four major dangers to North Dakota road signs: shooting, stealing, graffiti, and other damage. The program features a drawing contest so that young artists can help us illustrate the dangers of damaged or missing road signs and the efforts of the Sign Warrior to protect the state's signs.

Guidelines

  • Use letter-size paper (11 x 8½)
  • Drawn in landscape orientation (wider than they are tall)
  • Drawn in bold and vibrant colors for quality reproduction
    • Colored pencils or crayons (NO markers)
  • No guns or excessive violence in drawings
  • On the back of the drawing, in PENCIL, include:
    • Student's name
    • Teacher's name & email
    • School's name & address
  • Drawings (do not fold) must be submitted to
    • NDLTAP, 608 E Boulevard Ave, Bismarck, ND, 58505, by no later than Friday, January 26, 2024
    • Alternatively: drawings may be scanned or digitally photographed at a resolution of at least 300 dpi and emailed to ndltap@ugpti.org

Winning Submissions

Winning submissions chosen by NDLTAP will be featured on a Sign Warrior calendar to be distributed across the state. Students submitting winning drawings will receive an official Sign Warrior certificate and 10 copies of the calendar.

By making youth aware of the dangers that missing or damaged signs pose to their friends and family, we hope to reduce sign damage and theft in the future.

We encourage you use this activity in your classroom to create a new generation of Sign Warriors!
